We all love the euphoria that comes with our daily use of social media . It's fun and exciting. Social medias have really replaced our daily encounter in life . Many people can't fathom what a day would be like without visiting Facebook to checkout family and online friends, Instagram to check out Lasisi with his daily "Something just happened right now", Twitter to witness the birth of savage replies and Snapchat to monitor Celebs and crown themselves king with tongues out . Nowadays,we get our news first on social medias than on the Television and news papers and this highlights how important and attached we have become to Social media. Having Highlighted some importance of social Media today ,let's also consider the Addiction that goes with it .
What is social media?
The name is pretty self- explanatory. It is a mode of communication, either with pictures or words, with strangers. It helps one “interact” and “share ideas” with unknown folks. Social Media is becoming a necessity nowadays. Not only for individuals but also for the organizations.
Since there is a tremendous improvement on the side of technology, more & more social networks are coming up & serving the purpose of marketing professionals to reach their target audience.
What Causes Social Media Addiction?
One thing that's addicting in social media is its flexibility and capability of depicting something that isn't true. You can twist and turn your story making you look more successful, beautiful, funny, smart and almost anything that will make you more attractive. This garners you more attention and feeds your ego. However, I feel like being addicted to social media disconnects you from the real world and real life connections, making you realiant to pseudoattention you get from people you don't know. You will feel distant to people you encounter everyday in real life but will appear approachable and kind online. It alters you in so many ways everyday, little by little and you have to realize this isnt healthy. If only the time of those addicted online are spent sharing useful information, current news and helpful advices then instead of being stagnant they couldve helped spread news or helped take action against current health, social, medical, political and religious issues.
It has been proven that ‘likes’ release the serotonin in your brain, which is essentially “happy juice.” We naturally produce serotonin which makes us happy. Being addicted to social media is more powerful than being addicted to cigarettes.
If you are worried you may be addicted to social media, try this test:
Turn your phone off for one whole day. Do you get nervous? Anxious? Sad? Worried?
These could be indicators that you may rely on social media too much, but you may not be addicted. Addiction to anything is a cyclical cycle that follows this path:
I am sad > Turn to social media > I am happy > I spend too much time on social media > I am sad.
A true addiction to social media would be followed by some signals:
Not eating, not taking care of yourself, lack of connections face-to-face
Now ,How can you try to Overcome this Addiction?
1. Choose hours when you turn off and on wifi on your mobile and laptop. For the beginning 22pm - 7am. Clear your head. Read a book. Draw. Watch TV. Think about last or future holidays. Sleep.
2. Leave your phone when you eat. It’s extremely unpolite to not look or talk with the person you eat. If you eat alone, focus on chewing. Seriously. It’s good for your stomach. Fight with yourself, try to not take phone or look at the desktop. Nobody said it’s easy.
3. Think, what are you looking in social media. Talking with friends? Why you not meet them in real?
4. Find activities that take you from home. Bicycle, running, art events, standup? Try to not use phone while practicing or attending. Enjoy the REAL moment. Think about people around you, take deep breathe, watch what’s going on, how reality looks like. Force your brain to do something more that looking into social media.
I hope you apply this Recommendations and fight against the Addiction to Social medias. I would have Highlighted the first point to be deleting of the application but that's not easy because I always find my self installing the application I just deleted awhile ago within 15 minutes .
